Apple iPad 2 vs. Blackberry PlayBook 2.0

iPad 2

The iPad set the bar for user interface. It is clean, simple and powerful. While it is debatable who invented "Pinch to Zoom," there is no question that this feature is buttery smooth on all iDevices. Add the swiping through pictures and the ease of moving apps and you had a very easy and intuitive interface.

iOS 5.0 added some great new features. Now, four fingers swiping up will bring display the mutil-tasking bar and a four finger "closing pinch" of the hand will close open apps if these gestures are activated in the Settings app.

That leads to one major interface flaw that still plagues the iPad 2 (and all iDevices, for that matter;) To adjust settings of any application, you need to first leave the application and then go to the Settings app and make adjustments. You then need to go back to the app you were "tweaking." At times, this process can be quite cumbersome.

PlayBook 2.0

PlayBook 2.0 adds to some great features that have been there since launch. PlayBook 2.0 also does a bit of iPad imitating with the enhanced functionality of the App Dock now located at the bottom. Users can choose which apps to move in and out of the Bottom dock. The process is remarkably similar to that of the iPad - just touch and hold until the icons shake and then drag them to a new location in the dock.

Where the PlayBook really shines is the many gestures available. Where the PlayBook can be a challenge is in the multiplicity of gestures the user needs to remember.

Swiping to "wake" the device is very cool and convenient. Swiping from the lower left hand corner to the center will bring up the keyboard. Swiping from either corner (while in an app) to the center will show the Status bar.

One feature that the PlayBook gets spot on is the "swipe down from the top" gesture which brings up the Settings app from the Home screen and brings up the Options menu from within any app. This gesture becomes intuitive and extremely useful especially in theBrowser, Calendar and Message apps.

RIM likes to refer to the experience of making these tasks simpler as "BlackBerry Flow." The PlayBook almost seems to know what you want to do and makes tasks easier and more intuitive.

Possibly the most powerful and fun gesture is the "Swype up" to reduce an app and then the swipe up to "throw away" and close the app. While this is very WebOS like - it works and its great.

Round One Tally

Both devices shine in many areas, but when looking at the totality of the gestures and the user interfaces of both devices the PlayBook takes this round with 10 points and the iPad comes in a close second with 9 points.

Shake your phone and charge your battery

Use your motion power (kinetic energy) to charge your Android phone's battery and never need a battery saver. Check the battery indicator (battery monitor) and see that when you shake the phone (or you move) your battery is being charged slowly.
No need for a battery widget anymore to check your battery. Unlike solar charger or eco charger, it doesn't damage your phone and battery.

5 Most Useful Free Apps for BlackBerry

While the BlackBerry app market may not be nearly as large as the iPhone market, that doesn’t mean that there are not numerous, quality BlackBerry apps that many users will appreciate. Here are 5 of the most current and innovative apps for the BlackBerry. All three of these apps are also free!
Evernote
You can replace your spiral notebook for a 21st century update that enables you to record thoughts, brainstorms, and musings in a more organized fashion. In addition to text, save photos (i.e. class board notes) and audio (maybe an impromptu interview) from either your phone or desktop. Then you can search through them later. Just a few possibilities for Evernote include keeping all of your Internet browsing organized, preparing for meetings, taking snapshots of important information, researching, taking notes in class, and recording voice memos.
One of the most popular music streaming sites is now available for mobile devices. Pandora has a wide variety of music styles including jazz, classical, hip-hop, Latin, country, classic rock, pop, dance, and much more. You’ll enjoy all of Pandora’s great features in a version that is streamlined for EDGE connections, allowing you to listen to your music just about anywhere. You won’t even need a 3G BlackBerry. Some users enjoy Pandora so much that they opt to use that exclusively instead of loading their own music onto their phones.

Opera Mini 5

It is not a secret that it is much easier to navigate full HTML pages on Palm Pre and iPhone devices that allow multi-touch gestures than it is on BlackBerry devices. While Opera Mini 5 cannot magically give your BlackBerry multi-touch gestures, it will give your loading speed a jump start by compressing pages before loading them. It also has a more powerful interface that the default BlackBerry browser does with options such as Speed Dial shortcuts that launch favorite web sites in a single click. Additionally, thanks to the tabs, switching between web pages is very easy.

Opera allows BlackBerry users with both touch screen and keypad devices to navigate smoothly. The browser has the option of switching between landscape and portrait mode. It also allows you to adjust font size to make reading easier.

WhatsApp

If you are a text-buff, chances are you have already used WhatsApp on any of the other devices you owned in the past. WhatsApp is a multi-platform chatting app that can be used to send and receive text messages, photos, audio-recordings etc. The push notification make it a very reliable mode of communication with your friends and family.

BBC iPlayer lets you enjoy internet television and radio service on your BlackBerry and other supported devices. This app puts TV right into your pocket and you can watch any BBC shows from past 7 days. This app works only via Wi-Fi though.

Apple iPad 3 - New and Great Features

Apple iPad 3 Though the tablet promises quite a lot of new and exciting features, rumors indicate that it could be priced at a very high range. However, with the competition kicking in, expect that the iPad 3 will be set at a reasonable price. Apple is expected to release the iPhone 5 a few months after the launch of the iPad 3.

A6 Processor

The current Apple iPad 2 has a 900MHz dual-core ARM Cortext-A9 processor, Apple A5 chipset and PowerVr SGX543MP2 GPU. This certainly made the Apple iPad 2 a powerful tablet and a main competitor in the world of tablets. Now Apple is aiming to make the competition tougher by sporting an A6 Quad-core Processor in the iPad 3. This would make the iPad 3 as powerful as any high-end desktop.

According to Linley Group senior analyst Kevin Krewell, “We expect the A6 will be a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 design, which would be competitive with next year’s best mobile processors. In 2012, Nvidia will offer a quad-core Cortex-A9 processor, and Qualcomm will have the aforementioned MSM8960, a dual-core A15-class processor operating at 1.7GHz. Fabricating Apple’s A6 in 28nm (instead of the 40nm process Nvidia is using for its quad-core part) will reduce both die cost and power, yielding a much better product.”

iOS 5

The iPad 3 will come with the latest iOS 5, which will host the multi-touch gesture technology. However, analyst and tech enthusiasts predict that Apple would introduce OS X Lion for the tablet, since it will be powered by a quad-core processor.

This will also include multitasking features, such as notifications, task-finishing, app-switching, location and background sound.

3D Feature and New Retina Display

Apple enthusiast expected the Retina Display feature on Apple iPad 2; however, Apple has been working majorly for an improved version of it to include it in the iPad 3. The iPhone 4 currently supports the Retina Display with a screen resolution of 960 x 640. Apple explains Retina Display as: “Developing pixels a mere 78 micrometers wide, Apple engineers were able to pack four times the number of pixels into the same 3.5-inch (diagonal) screen found on earlier iPhone models. The resulting pixel density of iPhone 4 – 326 pixels per inch – makes text and graphics look smooth and continuous at any size.”

With the Retina Display feature, the screen resolution of the iPad3 will be 2048 x 1536 pixels. However, it is said that the third version of the tablet is delayed due to Retina Display issues, and Apple is expected to ship the tablet in early 2012.

There are speculations that the tablet will display the 3D view. Although it’s too early to expect features like 3D display, devices like the LG Optimus can record videos in 3D, and output the same through HDMI.

Cloud Computing

Apple announced its Cloud services during the WWDC 2011, and will definitely include the iCloud technology both in the iPhone 5 and iPad 3. With iCloud users can store photos, apps, calendars and access songs on iTunes without having them to store in the phone’s memory.

Camera
The iPad 3 will come with an improved camera, since the previous version of the table didn’t seem impressive enough. Unlike the iPad 2, the new tablet will come with LED flash to support the camera. It is expected to have a 5MP camera with 1080p or 720p video recording quality of 60 frames per second. The technology made by OmniVision will help reduce the size of the table by 20 percent.

Fingerprint Proof
Apple has already been granted patents on this technology, and is working real hard to make the iPad3 fingerprint proof. The touch screen will be coated with oleophobic materials, which will reduce the oil and fingerprints on the screen.

Apple 'iPad 4' Headed for October Launch with iPad 3 as Interim Upgrade?

In an effort to continue throwing ideas at the wall to see what might stick, the only occasionally reliable Digitimes recently reported that not only will Apple be releasing the iPad 3 with high-resolution "Retina" display in March as is widely expected, but that the company will follow that up with the release of the iPad 4 in October.
On the topic of the iPad 3, Digitimes suggests that the Retina display will be the main attraction of the new device, with better battery life also serving to entice customers. But other hardware upgrades for the iPad 3 are said to be rather minimal, as Apple is reportedly rolling out the iPad 3 alongside an iPad 2 price cut to $399 as an interim effort to set the stage for a bigger battle with the competition later in the year.

Apple will ship the so-called "iPad 3" with a full HD display in March and then "iPad 4" - named so by its component suppliers - with killer applications in October, according to industry sources in Taiwan. [...]

But a true battle for market share will arrive in the second half of the year when Apple ships its iPad 4 in October, about the time when Microsoft releases its Window 8 and Intel unveils its Clover Trail-W platform, the sources commented.

The 9.7-inch iPad 4 is expected to come with much upgraded hardware specifications and integrated applications so as to compete with an array of Android-, Wintel- or WoA (Windows on ARM)-based tablet PCs to be released in the fourth quarter, said the sources. The rumor is somewhat reminiscent of last year's round of claims, which suggested that the iPad 2's successor would appear in late 2011 as an interim upgrade carrying a Retina display. Claims of a late 2011 iPad came from several different sources in July and early August of last year before other sources including The Wall Street Journal put the claim to rest.

Digitimes has a proliferative record of Apple-related rumors and has occasionally offered accurate information. But its information is generally considered unreliable given a significant number of claims that have failed to materialize. Claims of two separate iPad launches this year are sure to pique interest though, and we'll be waiting to hear if other sources offer similar information going forward.

90% of Smartphone Users Like Larger Displays - Strategy Analytics

Smart phone displays are getting bigger day by day. Android users are already used to it but do all smart phone users like bigger displays? The answer lies in a report that came from Strategy Analytics, which says nine out out of ten smartphone users like to have bigger displays than they have previously used. Besides the current phone manufacturer they were using , they want larger screens. It was found in a report that most of smartphone users prefer 4 to 4.5 inches screen size as long as their phone is thin. The report also found that females consider phones with a bit smaller screen size than males. The Analysis was done on US and UK smartphone owners who own Android ,iPhone, BlackBerry, etc and used prototype models of smartphones and let the smartphone users choose from them.
Does this means that future generations of smartphone sizes are tending towards tablets? Of course “No” because you cant increase the size of your hand, and your jeans pocket also comes into consideration. Obviously smartphones like Samsung Galaxy Note and LG Optimus aren’t meant for everyone. Almost every smartphones manufacturers have at least entry level smartphones with screen sizes between both 3.2 and 3.7-inch, but the possibility of getting a 4 inch smartphone with high-end specs is impossible these days. For those who are size conscious and need high-end specs, there is always an iPhone.
There is no doubt that larger screens are good for multimedia consumption but a phone should be potable enough to be hold in a hand or to carry it out in your pockets, that’s whats phones are meant for. For those who like larger displays and wants tablet but can not afford to buy a second device, a larger screen sized phone is a way to go.

Sony Xperia S gets PlayStation Certification, Gaming Content and Store is now online

Sony Xperia S, one of the most apprehensive Smartphone available in the market has been put up to severe consent by applauding its demand by providing the PlayStation support. The placeholder link in the Xperia S app drawer redirects the user to a web page from where he/she can easily download the two main applications in context to PlayStation gaming. Before this very support one had to ease his way through placeholder link rather than the store itself. PlayStation store and PS Pocket application, the two applications needed can be easily downloaded now from the real PlayStation store which is not far from your finger tips if you own one. Besides, the reason behind the fact that why this Smartphone was kept without this feature when it hit the market in Europe is still unknown.

To download these applications without any discomfort you may need to allow or enable non-market applications in your phone’s settings>Applications, after that in the application tray run “Let’s start PS store”. The next step obviously would be to download the two required applications which will allow you to buy and play the games you want on the tip of your hands. Well off the records a point must be kept in keen consideration that you will need a PlayStation account or Sony network account to actually get into the gaming world rather Sony gaming catalogue through your smart phone. Although there is quite a bunch of games out there to play, but most of them can be only accessed through Xperia Play.

Check our PS3 Mods list too.

Sony as obviously gained its grace in the android market by various comprehensive models, but Xperia S was the most scarce and gloomy Smartphone. With the push in its features by allowing the users to grab onto the PlayStation support so naively, Sony could claim much acknowledgment from the market.
